Iran FM invited to Saudi Arabia to watch football match

TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abollahian held a phone conversation on Thursday night with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, in which he received an invitation from the top Saudi diplomat to attend a football match in Saudi Arabia.

In the conversation, the two ministers discussed some issues of interest to the two countries in various fields of bilateral relations, according to the Iranian foreign ministry.

The foreign ministers of the two countries emphasized the need to speed up joint cooperation in various fields, including economic, commercial, investment and tourism cooperation.

Referring to the recent important meeting of the Iranian foreign ministry with the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, Amir Abdollahian and bin Farhan agreed that the necessary steps should be taken in this direction in accordance with the proper process of political relations between the two countries.

Also, considering the importance of the role of cultural and sports cooperation in strengthening the atmosphere of friendship between the two nations, the two ministers consulted on strengthening this part of bilateral cooperation and agreed to advise the sports institutions of the two countries to resolve the recent problem that arose during the club competitions of the two countries through mutual respect, dialogue and understanding.

Considering the importance of the continuation of club football matches between the two countries in the direction of strengthening all-round cooperation, the Saudi Foreign Minister invited Amir Abdollahian to attend the first football match in Saudi Arabia.

The Iranian foreign minister also met with officials from Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan amid serious tensions between the two South Caucasus nations.

Armen Grigoryan, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Armenia, met with Amir Abdollahian on Monday. During the meeting, Amir Abdollahian expressed satisfaction with the growing trend of relations between Iran and Armenia and voiced hope that accelerating the implementation of agreements will boost trade volume to the targeted level of 3 billion dollars.

The Iranian foreign minister deemed it necessary to compile a comprehensive and long-term cooperation document to realize the vision of economic relations and to expand and deepen bilateral ties.

Amir Abdollahian emphasized the principled and unwavering policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in maintaining international borders and the territorial integrity of countries. He stressed the need for engaging regional actors to resolve regional problems, citing the 3+3 framework as an effective mechanism for resolving regional issues without external intervention.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also highlighted the Islamic Republic’s readiness to provide humanitarian aid to the displaced people of Karabakh.

For his part, Grigoryan described the economic relations between the two countries as growing, aiming to achieve mutually set goals.

Expressing appreciation for the principled positions of Iran in supporting Armenia’s territorial integrity, Armen Grigoryan welcomed the 3+3 negotiation framework. Grigoryan stated: “Armenia is determined to expand and deepen its relations with the Islamic Republic, and views Iran’s role in the developments of the South Caucasus and the establishment of stable peace as constructive and important.”

It is noted that 50 tons of aid from the Red Crescent of the Islamic Republic of Iran arrived in Armenia on Tuesday.

Amir Abdollahian and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev's special aide Khalaf Khalafov also met on Wednesday and exchanged views over a range of issues.

In the meeting, Amir Abdollahian pointed to his recent talks with Azerbaijan's president, saying Iran is determined to expand relations in all areas with the Republic of Azerbaijan.

He also called for balancing the different aspects of bilateral ties between Tehran and Baku.

Amir Abdollahian then referred to the restoration of Azerbaijan's sovereignty over the region of Karabakh and stressed the necessity of starting a new chapter in regional cooperation for the sake of peace and economic development in the Caucasus.

"We believe that from now on, in this region, the language of peace and security should replace that of tension and conflict," he added.

The special aide to Azerbaijan's president, for his part, described the recent meeting between Amir Abdollahian and Aliyev as positive and constructive.

Khalavov spoke about the positive developments in bilateral ties, describing the prospect of relations as promising.

Khalafov underlined the need to begin a new and progressing chapter in bilateral relations in all fields.

He then outlined the recent developments in Karabakh and the policies of the government of Azerbaijan to support the rights of ethnic Armenians inside Azerbaijan.

Khalafov said the Azeri government's priority is to guarantee the freedom and rights of Karabakh's Armenians and supply their needs.

Amir Abdollahian also met with Mustafa Sanu, the Secretary General of the Islamic Jurisprudence Assembly of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, who was in Tehran to participate in the 37th Islamic Unity Conference. The two sides engaged in discussions and exchanged opinions.

During the meeting, Amir Abdollahian emphasized the crucial and influential role of the Islamic Jurisprudence Council in the region’s evolving landscape. He stressed the significance of increased interactions among intellectuals in the Islamic world to bolster Islamic unity and address the challenges confronting the Islamic Ummah.

Amir Abdollahian underscored the necessity for consensus and coordination to decisively and intelligently handle creeping movements and offensive actions, such as insults to holy entities and Islamic values. He affirmed Iran’s readiness to collaborate with the Islamic Jurisprudence Assembly in this regard.

In the meeting, Sanu acknowledged the vital and influential role of the Islamic Republic in the Islamic world. He expressed gratitude for Iran’s valuable initiatives and efforts toward uniting the Islamic Ummah and fostering closer ties between Islamic sects. Sanu also presented a report on the actions and activities of the Islamic Jurisprudence Assembly.

He called for increased support from Iran for the Islamic Jurisprudence Assembly and welcomed the presence and participation of more scholars from Iran in the programs of the Assembly.
